Let’s have a look at how to make the mixed media collage flower!
How To Make A Mixed Media Collage Flower.
The first step in making your mixed media collage flower is choosing something that inspires you. For this project, I choose a simple reference picture to start off with. Big petals and not too many flowers to start off with.
Below is my reference picture which you can use too.

Step One:
The first step in this project is using a pencil to draw out your flowers. Don’t go into too much details as the collage itself will do all the work.
As you can see from below, I have lightly drawn out the shapes of the flower so I know where to put the collage paper.

Next choose your collage paper and see what will work best. I choose different shades of the same type of paper, so that it looks cohesive and works well together.

Step Two:
With this collage piece, I didn’t cut out my shapes but I used torn pieces to give it a more rough and edgy look. I started off with the center of the flowers and used yellow pieces of torn paper. Making sure to rip the pieces into the right shapes.

Step Three:
Next I started to work on the petals. I tore larger pieces to make shapes of the petals but not being too careful with the shapes because I like the unpredictability of collage art.

Step Four:
I carried on with the next flower. Using a different shade of paper for the next flower for some variation. Try and use different lengths for the petals to give it some flare and not too much of a rigid look.

Step Five:
With the smaller flower petals, I used a different scale collage print. A smaller print then the rest and gave it a more busy look.

Step Six:
Time for the stems and I used green collage torn pieces but not being too precise with them.

Step Seven:
This next part is what makes this collage piece a ‘mixed media’ art piece, because I used a sewing machine to draw over the flowers in stitch. You can totally use only a black pen for this next step, however, if you have a sewing machine at hand, it’s totally worth getting it out for and so much fun!

For this I using a ‘free motion darning foot’ instead of the regular straight stitch foot that’s used for sewing. If you don’t have a darning foot, you can simply take off the normal foot and sew just like that.

As you can see below, I used black sewing thread to ‘draw’ over my collage flower. I’m using the sewing machine to outline the flower and put in all the extra details.

In some parts, I even left out a petal on the collage and drew it in with ‘stitch’ instead as you can see below. It makes it look extra creative and you can go over all of it and draw in all the details with the machine or somple just do the outline.

Finished Result:
And there we have our finished mixed media collage flower! The result looks gorgeous and it’s always unpredictable. You can have so much fun with this and make just about anything.
Make all different types of flowers and art with this style of mixed media collage and go wild. Add different mixed media elements such as painting on top or drawing by hand, whatever you like.

I hope you got lots of inspiration from this project and try out your own. This can also be a great project to do with kids (minus the sewing machine). It’s a quick and fun project that will leave you with a beautiful piece of art.
