We all want to find some calm moments in our busy lives, and what better way to calm the mind with some simple zentangle doodles. For this simple art form, all you need is a pen and paper, and just some creative eagerness for the doodles to flow on the paper.
Zentangle isn’t just ‘doodling’, but it’s actually a very intentional process of creating intricate patterns with simple lines. A lot of traditional art forms focus mor on the end outcome and how ‘perfect’ the art piece can be, but zentangle doodles is more about the process rather than the end goal.

In this blog post, I have created easy step-by-step drawing tutorial to help you with your zentangle patterns. This is great if you are a beginner doodler, because it will take the pressure off of knowing what to do. In each zentangle pattern, we will have a base template to fill in with doodle lines, don’t worry these templates are free to download.
Each template is a flower with different shapes and petals. Don’t be pressured to doodle exactly as the pictures show, this is just to help with the process but by all means do as you please. The doodles are in black and white, but you can do these zentangle doodles in any color you like, as well as coloring in whatever parts you want.

Let’s get into the step-by-step zentangle flower doodles!
Zentangle doodle: flower 1
Starting off with a simple flower base.

Step 1

Draw wavy lines within each petal to create some shapes throughout the flower.
Step 2

With a finer pen, I created some extended outer ‘petals’ or shapes on the flower.
Step 3

Doodle in even more shapes within the outer petals. This can be any little doodles you like, I just choose this style to work with.
Step 4

Finishing off this zentangle flower, I kept it simple by doing small little dots in the petals. You can continue to do lots of more small dots or not, but I wanted to keep this simple.
zentangle doodle: flower 2
Continuing with the simpl style flower base for this zentangle doodle.

Step 1

This flower has big petals, so I decided to do different patterns for each petal. This first one a combination of wavy lines and dots.
Step 2

The next petal are long lines with dashes, you can carry on with the wavy lines or not. Just go with the flow.
Step 3

Adding some more little ‘shell’ type doodles to this petal.
Step 4

I carried on filling each petal with different shapes and squiggles, Make it fun and do whatever little doodles you like in each petal.
Step 5

I finished off this zentanlge flower by doing little petal shapes in each petal and a little flower with dots in the centre! It looks quite busy but very zentangle style.
zentangle doodle: flower 3
A spiral shaped flower this time.

Step 1

For this flower, I decided to go with only wavy lines throughout the petals to imitate the spiral petals.
Step 2

The next petal I drew out the shape of the petal – inside the petal.
Step 3

Carrying on with the wavy lines in the next petals.
Step 4

This zentangle flower is complete with all its wavy lines! It could look completely different with other doodles, maybe next time I will add more petals to the outer edges and draw in more detailed doodles.
zentangle doodle: flower 4
This flower reminds me of a daisy! It looks fun to doodle on.

Step 1

I drew even more petals for this one in the same style.
Step 2

Keeping it simple, I doodled more smaller petals inside.
Step 3

Similar to the last step, more shapes to imitate the outer petals.
Step 4

Not over complicating this pattern, I simply did little dots in each petal and circles in the centre. It looks very boho!
Zentanlge doodle: flower 5
Another simple flower shape to work with.

Step 1

‘Pointy’ style petals for the outer doodles. Making the flower expand more.
Step 2

This is a more detailed and intricate design as you can see. Small round dashed inside the petals and more petal shapes in each petal. I have also doodled a circle in the centre with lines crossing over.
Step 3

Going all in with the details, I added many more lines to the outer petals, crossing over each other.
Step 4

Adding even more details, to the outer parts, I doodled come small dots and petal shapes.
zentangle doodle: flower 6
Going from complicated patterns to simple designs again with this four petal flower.

Step 1

For this flower, I decided to go with lots of different shapes and doodles in each petal, just going with what feels good to doodle. That’s the whole point of zentangle doodles, it’s completely freeing.

Step 2

Adding more lines and circles on the next petal.
Step 3

Doodling more on eqach petal with the same style of lines and dots but in different ways.
Step 4

Finishing it off with a circle in the middle.
zentangle doodle: flower 7
A flower with spikey petals!

Step 1

I decided to focus on the inner circle first with this flower. Doodling inside and out.
Step 2

Drawing triangle shapes on the inside of the petals to enhance the spikey look and expand the flower.
Step 3

A few more lines within the petals to create more triangle shapes.
Step 4

Finishing off this flower with some circles and lines at the top of the petals. It’s giving very African patterns vibes!
Zentangle doodle: flower 8
Another four petal flower, I’m going for more simpler doodles this time.

Step 1

I went all in with the shapes to start filling this flower up. Smaller circles on the outer edges of the petals and imitating the shape of the petals in the inner petals, giving it a ‘dome’ type look.
Step 2

I drew on more petals on the outer edges, in the same style as the original petals.
Step 3

More petals within the outer petals and some diamond shapes inside them, filling them in to give more definition.
Step 4

Finishing off the doodle with some lines on the outer petals to give the pattern some contrast. Also adding little petals on the circle in the middle.
zentangle doodle: flower 9
A flower template with lots of petals to work with!

Step 1

Following the inner petals, I drew in more petals with small dots inside them to give it a more intricate look.
Step 2

Draw in some wavy lines inside the outer petals.
Step 3

With a finer tip pen, I drew in little squiggles in the outer petals to finish this one off.
zentangle doodle: flower 10
The last zentangle doodle flower and its a nice swirly one with lots of petals.

Step 1

Starting off with some checkered lines inside the big centre.
Step 2

In each of the petals, doodle in wavy lines, but alternating in the direction of the lines to not make all the lines go the same way, Draw in little dots in between the lines.
Step 3

Finish off the pattern with smaller petals on the outer edges, with little diamond shaped filled in. And there we have it!
This comes up to the end of our tutorial for easy zentangle doodles, and as you can see there are so many doodles you can do. The step-by-step guide is exactly that, just a guide, you don’t have to follow what the exact doodles but just go with the flow!
