Today we are drawing a wonderful wildflower, in just a few easy steps!

Wildflowers are elegant little flowers that are delicate, yet have some finer details to them. This beautiful botanical drawing is easier to draw then it looks.

It’s built on simple shapes and repetitive lines, you’ll have a gorgeous hand-drawn illustration before you know it.

All you will need for this drawing is some simple art supplies, such as a pencil, eraser, pen and paper, and we’re ready to go!

Tutorial: Step by step

step 1

Start off with a basic sketch of the flower, using a pencil. Draw just the basic shape of the wildflower and the general composition.

This will be our base for the drawing and help us to build out the flower using the basic shapes.

step 2

Next, using a pen, or you can carry on drawing with a pencil and outline later.. Draw out the first stem of the composition. Draw it with a nice wave and not too straight.

step 3

Draw a small circle for the first flower’s centre and fill it in.

step 4

Now it’s time to start drawing in some petals. Notice how the petals aren’t totally symmetrical but all have a long ‘U’ shape to them.

Draw your petals starting from the centre dot and work your way out and follow the pencil guide to know how long the petal should be.

step 5

Draw the last two petals of the main flower in the same way as the first three.

step 6

Next draw a slight curved stem for the next flower, pointing outwards to the right.

step 7

The first petal of the side flower, have more of a rounded shape to it because it’s facing sideways. It’s almost like a teardrop shape.

step 8

Draw two more petals for this side facing flower. Not all of the petals are even and the middle petal is slightly longer then the two petals beside it.

step 9

Just slightly below the second flower, draw an even smaller stem facing to the left with a small filled in circle for the centre. This is the start of the third flower.

step 10

In this third flower, draw the petals in how we drew them out in the first flower. Remember to keep the petals more of a ‘U’ shape and be careful not to overlap onto the stem with some of the smaller petals.

Create the petals with even spacing between them.

step 11

With the flowers in place, now it’s time to start creating some foliage. Starting from the base of the stem, draw a line to create the centre branch angling outward, then add smaller lines off each side.

Draw short, quick strokes that taper to a point. Keep them loose and slightly irregular to make them look ‘wild’.

step 12

Draw the same style branches to the left side of the stem, but keeping this branch slightly smaller.

step 13

Now add the small accent leaves directly on the stem. These are simple pointed ovals, just two curved lines meeting at a tip.

Place one angling upward on the left side of the stem, and a longer, flatter one stretching out to the right a little lower down.

step 14

It’s time to start adding the final touches to our wildflower drawing, starting off with drawing some smaller leaves just under the side facing flower.

Another little detail is to add some shading to the small buds we drew previously.

step 15

To give the flowers some more character, add some lines within the petals. They don’t have to be straight lines but just going in the waves of the petals.

step 16

Lastly, add some small ‘twigs’ to the two branches as this will make it look even more ‘wild’.

Once you are happy with it, use an eraser to rub out the under sketch.

Finished result

And there you have your finished wildflower drawing!

As you can see, this is a super easy tutorial with a great end result. It only needs a bit of patience and creativity. Leave it as a line drawing or add some color to make it pop.
