If you are an artist and are looking for some watercolor flower painting ideas to help with your painting, then this post is just for you! We 23 beautiful paintings for you to look at for inspiration for your own paintings.
As an artist myself, I know that looking at other people’s work can be a source of motivation and inspiration. Just seeing how they have created the composition and what type of colors have been used, all the different strokes and details in the painting. It can be a good starting point, whether you are a pro artist or just starting out.

Painting watercolor flowers can be a very therapeutic experience and not only connects you with nature, but can be a fulfilling hobby. A skill like watercolor painting, whether that is painting flowers or animals or nature, requires patience to gain that skill over time. Like all skills, practice makes perfect and everyone has their own style of painting. Some artists like to paint loose florals while others like to paint more illustrated, which you will see below.
There are a few supplies one needs to paint and as an artist myself, below are a few recommendations I have used and still use till this day.

Starting off with this lovely painting, with simple brush strokes. This type of floral painting can be achieved by using a round brush and simply making one large stroke with it. I love the simplicity of it and the minimal use of colors.

These beautiful tulips are dreamy and have a lot of detail in them. If you plan on creating tulips like this, you can start by making a sketch which can help with the painting. This type of painting has many layers so wait for the paint to dry before you add the next layer.

These pretty little daisy flowers are small and delicate. To achieve this type of look, use a bit of extra water, but not too much, to get a translucent look. Staring off small and easy like this, can help build confidence with the amount of water and paint to use.

A very busy and colorful meadow of flowers. If you feel daunted by this but want to create a lovely meadow, start off with one flower at a time and add more as you go. All the little flowers can be easy to paint one step at a time.

A lovely little composition of roses and the colors really go well together. This is a loose style of painting which can be really fun to do, however creating the right composition can take practice. Look at different real life flower composition pictures to help you with your placement and go for it.

A very small but detailed flower. This type of flower has different layers and just wait for your first base to dry, before you add the ‘lined’ details on-top. Flowers like this are more realistic and need a bit more patience.

A very loose and flowing watercolor floral painting, and this style is one of my favourites. It uses a lot of water with not much paint and creates such a lovely effect. Choose your favourite colors and flow with it!

Popping with color these roses are! A lovely bright shade of pink with some added gold paint on-top. There are many metallic watercolor paints out there which are lovely for that extra bit of glitz on your paintings.

From bright shades to more pastel colors and lighter tones. This lovely busy painting is a well thought out one with the colors really working together. The composition is really nice too and the leafs have been added once the loose flowers have dried on the page.

This composition has a very good structure and the artist must definitely be good at them because it takes skill to create something like this. The dark leaves really go well with the color palette and small berries have also been added for that extra details.

Peonies are always a great source of inspiration for watercolor floral artists as you can see from this picture. This very loose and pigmented painting can be achieved with very gestural brush strokes without over thinking, but be mindful of where you place your flowers for the composition to work.

Another very loose floral painting, but this one without any composition and just lovely flowers. Sometimes needing to do a composition can make a person overthink the painting and not have fun, but creating something like this doesn’t have any pressure. This artist has just gone with the flow and used a limited color palette to just concentrate on only the painting process.

This autumnal color palette painting is also very loose and flowing without much effort needed but only some brush strokes. The lined details on-top with a fine liner can give the painting some shape if thats what you are after and gives it a lovely overall doodle feel.

This mesmerising piece of floral art is subtle and strong at the same time. The different shades used create a beautiful ethereal effect and we are definitely here for it! This is a very intuitive painting and something which is fun and easy to try.

A lovely bouquet of roses and peonies, another classical style of composition. My favourite part is all the greenery and foliage used to add to the flowers. Sometimes the extra foliage bits are really what makes the painting.

Simple and gestural art at its finest. This type of look requires not much effort but it still looks beautiful. These watercolors look handmade and some artists even make their own paints! Something to add to the bucket list 😉

Daffodils for this lovely art piece and what a colorful piece it is. This has elements of loose painting as well as more detailed for the flowers. The artist has used a loose approach for the leaves with the paint flowing into itself where as the daffodils have more structure and detail. It goes to show that both styles, loose and structured can be used in the same painting.

This painting is giving me very Christmas season vibes with the colors and berries, but I’m loving it. It looks almost illustrated but painted at the same time and the composition works really well.

A very colorful and busy ditsy painting. This painting might look very detailed and difficult, but if taken step by step, it’s an easy style to achieve. Again all the foliage around the flowers is what really makes the painting, the leaves are painted in different shades of green for that extra detail.

Painting white flowers can be a difficult skill to achieve and this artist has definitely mastered that skill because she has done it very well! White flowers are tonal greys mixed in with a little blue to get the different shades and can be difficult to get right. These flowers look lovely with the red flowers and this is also giving a very Christmas feel.

Lilac shrubs for me have always been a difficult flower to paint! But this artist has done a great job of it and gone for the more abstract style of painting for this which has worked really well. Sometimes if you are intimidated by a flower, just do your own interpretation of it and make it a work of art.

This watercolor floral painting has a very illustrated look which is different from the rest of the paintings we have seen. This type of style is really controlled and not much water is used. Sometimes first drawing the layout out can really help with this style.

We finish off with this delicate and tonal shades of purple piece. This is a lovely loose painting, it’s flowers are very loose and translucent but the centre is added with its little details.
