Making collages from scraps or gelli prints is a fun and relaxing way to unwind. Collage has no pressure of being the ‘perfect’ art piece, but it’s all about going with the flow.
Tutorial
For this collage piece, I decided to use one of my geli prints as the base of the collage. It was some foliage that I took a print of and it came out nicely.
This print already has the shape for the collage as I wanted it to be a botanical. It has the stem and also the ‘flower’ shapes at the top.
Once I had decided what to collage, I then chose my collage papers.
Choosing the right papers can definitely be challenging. I usually go with the colors that work well together.
I decided to go with this patterned blue paper for some of the ‘flower’ shapes.
These are very loose interpretations of flowers as you can see. Torn paper collage can be tricky to get the right shapes, however it outcome is very abstract!
Next I decided on which paper to choose for the stems. Seeing as the flowers were patterned, I decided to keep with the patterned papers and go for this lovely yellow patterned paper.
Gluing as I go along, I tore the stem shapes and stuck them down.
Next I decided I wanted a few leaves next to the stems, and I choose this deep green paper.

For the next flower, I chose a different paper but decided to stick to the shade of blue.
Once there were a few ‘flowers’ on, I chose the paper to do the stem. Since the flower paper was quite plain, I kept the stem paper plain too.
Next I added some leaves to the second stem. Tearing them loosely and placing a few one the stems.
After the collage was complete, I wanted to add some line work around the collage.
Using a fineliner, I went over the collage. I usually do this with stitching, as you can see in this post with a sewing machine, but I decided to keep it simple this time and only use a pen.
Here is the final outcome of my abstract collage flower! It’s a simple concept but really fun and a great exercise for using in your sketchbook or art journal.
